Thesis Statement
In a society where garments are disposed of as quickly as they are created, this exhibition stitches together stories of renewal and hope. At the intersection of fashion, photography, and sustainability, this show offers a reflection on our collective responsibility toward the environment. Through the repurposing of textiles that would otherwise contribute to landfills, an internal reconsideration is necessary to understand our relationship with clothing and consumption. Each piece is a reminder of the ecosystem we share with wildlife, signaling an ancient emotional connection to the natural world. This display of art aims to spark conversations about environmental stewardship and inspire change, demonstrating how personal choices can contribute to a larger, global effort.
My use of photography captures moments I have experienced while traveling with the Xavier Expeditions program, learning about wildlife conservation from generous and devoted human beings in the field. In addition, the garment design process focuses on the transformation of second-hand fabrics and textiles, reimagining discarded materials into high-quality wearable art. Screen-printing is used in the process to further communicate stories of the beauty and urgency of wildlife conservation efforts around the world. By meticulously layering textures and prints, each garment serves as a testament to the endless creative possibilities of upcycling. My work not only celebrates the aesthetic appeal of sustainable fashion, but also symbolizes a future where fashion and conservation thrive together.
My solo gallery exhibition was open for two weeks at the Xavier University Art Galleries. Now, my sustainably sourced, hand-crafted, wearable art can be found on my Instagram page @designedbyroan.
